Supreme Court (Abortion)

Life matters to God. Before the end of the first chapter of the first book of the Bible, we see why: Because He created every human being—male and female—in His image.

  • “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness . . .’. So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Gen 1: 26–27

This act of creation confers value upon every human life. Consider the words of praise David offered the Lord in Psalm 139:

  • O Lord, You have searched me and known me. . . Such knowledge is too wonderful for me. . . For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them. How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! (v. 1–18)

From Old Testament to New, Scripture attests to the value of life from the moment of creation:

  • Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

  • “. . . He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.” Luke 1:15

  • Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, and He who formed you from the womb: “I am the Lord, who makes all things . . .Isaiah 44:24

As Believers, we do well to pay attention to the things that matter to God. This is why it’s so important that we advocate for the lives of the unborn with love and grace. The abortion of a baby at any point from the moment of conception is nothing less than the shedding of innocent blood, a thing that God detests and calls an abomination (Ex. 20:13, Prov. 6:17). There can be no equivocation on this—there are no considerations that make the sin of abortion acceptable in any instances to the Lord.

Beloved, I don’t say this to shame anyone who has had an abortion—it’s a sin like any other, and we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23). The good news is there is grace and redemption available for all sinners who repent and confess (1 John 1:9) and receive Jesus as their Savior (John 3:16)!

  • “(Jesus) Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.” 1 Pet. 2:24

God’s grace through the work of Jesus on the cross is big enough for all sin, including abortion, and His forgiveness is available right now.

But what happens when individual sin like abortion becomes the law of the land? The Bible tells us that God executes judgment against nations just as He does against individuals. God cares about nations—He establishes them, preserves them for the good of His Kingdom, and, brings them to ruin if they remain stubborn in their rebellion against Him (Prov. 14:34, Job 12:23).

To honor the life God creates and intercede for individuals and our nation, we must protect the unborn!

Since Roe v. Wade made abortions legal within the first 24 weeks of gestation, abortion has been a hotly contested issue on the national stage. Right now, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization is a pending U.S. Supreme Court case dealing with the constitutionality of a 2018 Mississippi law that banned abortions after the first 15 weeks of pregnancy. Lower courts prevented enforcement of the law on the basis that it violated a woman’s rights in Roe v. Wade. Oral hearings are scheduled for December 1, 2021.

Beloved, this is a seminal moment in our nation’s history. Please join me in praying for abortion laws to change. Pray for a favorable outcome in Dobbs. Pray for our Supreme Court Justices by name. Vote for candidates who are adamantly pro-life. Act with your time, talents, and resources to support the work of those who are fighting to protect the lives of the unborn. Show grace and love to those who have suffered from abortions. Above all, always be ready to offer the hope found in Jesus alone. Together we can turn the tide on abortion and bring glory and honor to God!

  • “But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence.” 1 Cor. 1: 27–29
